context

Every year, thousands of patients seek care at the HUG emergency department. Among them, some live with HIV without knowing it. Emergency services are a key point for early detection, yet too often opportunities for testing are missed. These lost chances delay effective treatment and increase transmission risks. Understanding why diagnoses are not made on time is essential to improving patient health and strengthening prevention. This project aims to analyze these situations both scientifically and humanely, transforming clinical practice and positioning the emergency department as a central player in the fight against HIV.

Project

The project aims to conduct an in-depth study of 'missed opportunities' for HIV diagnosis in the emergency department. Through the analysis of medical records, interviews with healthcare professionals, and participatory workshops, the team will identify barriers preventing timely testing. The findings will provide a better understanding of the clinical, organizational, and human factors behind these situations. Based on this knowledge, concrete recommendations will be developed to improve practice. The goal is to ensure that every patient with an indication for HIV testing receives it promptly and respectfully. This project strengthens HUG’s commitment to excellence in both quality of care and public health.
